Scholarship Opportunities

​​​​​​​​The College of Education offers a variety of awards to COE students. Some scholarships pertain to students in certain academic career levels, majors, or class standings. Please carefully read all information below to ensure accurate submission process.

Scholarship Application Dates Academic Year 2024-2025

Applications for the 2024-2025 Academic Year will open in September 2024 and be available September 15—October 15. Applications must be submitted through Scholarship Connect. The opportunities you are eligible for below automatically become available on the opening date above once the general application is completed. Some of the scholarships below may only need the general application in order to apply and therefore no further information/application is needed, and you will automatically be considered for opportunities in which you qualify.*

*You must complete and submit any additional questions via Scholarship Connect to be considered for the opportunities below beyond the general application (as noted above, if you are eligible for these additional opportunities, they will automatically be made available via your Scholarship Connect dashboard as a conditional application). This new system differs from previous years, and students are no longer required to manually apply to each opportunity separately unless applying for the Value-Creating Scholarship or the Student Teaching Scholarship. Those applications still require a separate, individual application (additional info for applying to Value-Creating and Student Teaching Scholarships found under the “How to Apply” section below).

How to Apply

  • Scholarships that include “demonstrate financial need” criteria are based on submission of yearly FAFSA applications for Federal Student Aid. Submission of FAFSA is required to become automatically eligible for financial need-based opportunities. Please note that students are not required to accept financial aid packages in order to be considered for need-based scholarships, they need only fill out and submit the application. Any federal financial aid accepted on behalf of the student through the FAFSA process is the responsibility of the student.
  • All College of Education scholarship applications are completed online at the Scholarship Connect website.
  • Students log in using their Campus Connect credentials.
  • Students will be prompted to submit a General Scholarship Application. This application may be submitted any time, but must be resubmitted each academic year after July 15. Please note: after first completing the General Application, you will automatically be prompted to answer additional questions (via a conditional application) to be considered for College of Education scholarship opportunities for which you qualify. Please ensure you answer and submit any additional opportunities that become available on your Scholarship Connect dashboard between September 16 and the close date on October 16.
  • Students can view additional internal and external scholarships under the Opportunities tab. There are three options: Recommended, Ours, and External. Students applying to Student Teaching Scholarships, or the Value-Creating Scholarship may search for those specifically under the “Ours” option and apply. Students may search for external scholarships under the “external” tab and apply.
  • Scholarship applications must be completed and submitted by the deadline.
  • Result notification times vary. Award decision notifications are made via Scholarship Connect. It will read "Reviewed Not Selected" if an applicant is not selected for an award. It will read "Offered" if an applicant has been offered a scholarship award. Individual emails are not sent to applicants not selected.

Scholarship Criteria

The Student Teaching and Internships Scholarship is offered each quarter to applicants who currently are performing their student teaching or required internship. Scholarship application periods and deadlines will be shared with all current students through the weekly OASIS Newsletter. Students are only eligible for the scholarship during the quarter they are performing their student teaching or internship. For example, if you are student teaching in spring apply for the spring scholarship. Students performing their counseling practicum are only eligible to apply in one quarter of their year-long internship. Members of AUSL/CTR cohorts are not eligible for the Student Teaching and Internships Scholarship. Scholarships are awarded part way through the quarter in which you applied.

The Eileen and Shirley Stack Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Eileen and Shirley Stack and seeks to support future educators, with preference given to students who graduated from an accredited Chicago Public High School. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the College of Education
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to those who have graduated from an accredited Chicago Public High School

College of Education Endowed Scholarship in Honor of the Velasquez Family

This scholarship was established in honor of the Velasquez Family with the purpose of providing recognition and financial assistance to a first-generation college student. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be a first-generation college student
  • Demonstrate commitment to the advancement of the Mexican-American community

The Stewart/McHugh Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Delila Mae Stewart, the mother of former College of Education Dean Barbara Sizemore, and Eleanor McHugh. The award supports students who are committed to serving an urban, multicultural community and those who have overcome personal or educational hardship. To qualify, applicants must:

McHugh Criteria:

  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be committed to serving an urban, multicultural community
  • Possess a history of overcoming personal or educational obstacles or hardships

Stewart Criteria:

  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student in COE
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Preference may be given to a student who is a member of a historically underrepresented minority (determined via self-identification on scholarship app) OR a student who demonstrates a commitment to furthering the role of African American students or otherwise serving urban, multicultural communities.

The Dan and Irene Hayes Mathematics Education Scholarship

This scholarship supports a mathematics student in the College of Education. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in secondary mathematics education in the College of Education
  • Preference shall be given to a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Science in Middle Scholl Mathematics Education (MSME) Program in the College of Education
  • If a candidate from the MSME Program is not available, a secondary mathematics education candidate (undergraduate or graduate student) may receive the scholarship.
  • Demonstrate good academic standing

The George and Mary Heerey Cucich Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of George and Mary Heerey Cucich and supports a student in the College of Education. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Maintain a C+ grade point average

The Olichwier Scholarship

This scholarship was established by alumna Mary Olichwier and James Olichwier. The award supports a graduate of St. Rita High School in Chicago who is enrolled in the College of Education. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be a graduate of St. Rita High School in Chicago

The Joanne & Arthur R. Velasquez Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Joanne and Arthur Velasquez to provide recognition to students in the College of Education. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need

The Dr. Rafaela Weffer Endowed Scholarship for Bilingual Educators

This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Rafaela Weffer, the first Hispanic and Latina professor at the College of Education. This award provides recognition to bilingual educators who have experience or interest in working in schools with a need for bilingual instructors. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Speak fluently in Spanish or another foreign language
  • Express interest in working in a school with a need for bilingual teachers
  • All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible

The Theodore and Theresa Krom Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by DePaul alumna Mrs. Gloria Soiya in honor of her parents, Theodore and Theresa Krom. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need

The Darlene Glickman Larson Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by DePaul alumna Dr. Darlene G. Larson. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Special consideration is given to applicants who are females from historically underrepresented groups or to those committed to working with underrepresented students by working in urban, multicultural communities

The John J. Pedicone, Sr. and Dr. Jack Lane Scholarship

This scholarship was established by College of Education alumnus John J. Pedicone in honor of his father, John J. Pedicone, Sr., and his former professor, Dr. Jack Lane. The scholarship provides recognition and financial assistance to students enrolled in the College of Education who are in good academic standing and have financial need.

The Elsie Luhan Scholarship

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Secondary Math Education student
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Available to undergraduate and graduate students

The Stella A. Butkevicius Balesh and Ronald J. Balesh Endowed Scholarship

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education in a Teacher Education or Counseling program
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Preference may be given to students interested in working with vulnerable communities, students planning to teach in the area of physical science, or interested in working with the Lithuanian population
  • Available to undergraduate and graduate students

The Sister Elizabeth Ann Yocius Endowed Scholarship

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Available to undergraduate and graduate students

The Dr. John and Justina Tzeng Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Justina Tzeng in memory of her husband, DePaul alumnus John Tzeng. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be a graduate student enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Preference may be given to students of Asian descent OR students who have demonstrated an interest/commitment to increasing the prevalence of individuals of Asian descent in the field of Education

The John and Frances Beck Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of John and Frances Beck and provides recognition and financial assistance to students who currently serve as elementary or secondary school teachers. Preference is given to those currently teaching or planning to teach at a Catholic elementary or secondary school. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be a graduate student enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Currently serve as elementary or secondary teachers
  • Preference given to those who currently teach or plan to teach at Catholic elementary or secondary schools

The Meister/Carlson Scholarship

This scholarship seeks to honor a student who changed careers to become an educator. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be a graduate student enrolled in the College of Education
  • Be enrolled in the Teaching and Learning program
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have changed career path to become an educator

Frank and Frances Zeman Memorial Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Education

This scholarship was established in memory of Emily V. Zeman, DePaul Class of 1942. The award honors students who currently teach in Chicago Public Schools or Archdiocese of Chicago schools. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Preference for a graduate student teaching in Chicago Public Schools or Archdiocese of Chicago Schools
  • Eligibility based on financial need OR merit

The Urban and Virginia Fleege Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Urban and Virginia Fleege and supports outstanding graduate students enrolled in the College of Education. Preference is given to students living in the western suburbs of Chicago. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be a full-time or part-time graduate student enrolled in the College of Education
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have completed a minimum of 8 quarter hoursPreference is given to students living in the western suburbs of Chicago.

Counseling Student Endowed Award in Honor of Rev. Patrick J. McDevitt, C.M.

This award provides recognition and financial assistance to students enrolled in the Counseling Program in the College of Education who are in good academic standing and who have financial need. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be a graduate student enrolled in the College of Education
  • Be enrolled in the Counseling program
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial need

The Value-Creating Education Scholarship

The Institute for Daisaku Ikeda Studies in Education, through its Value-Creating Education scholarship, provides recognition and financial assistance to students enrolled in the Master of Education (MEd) program in Value-Creating Education for Global Citizenship who are in good academic standing. The Value-Creating Education scholarship award provides up to $15,000 in tuition support for recipients. In order to remain eligible, student award recipients must be enrolled in program courses throughout the full academic year and may only take off quarters if their required courses are not offered. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Education (MEd) program in Value-Creating Education for Global Citizenship program
  • Demonstrate good academic standing
  • Demonstrate financial needAdditional consideration may be given to students from underrepresented populations or underrepresented geographic locations in the field of value-creating education or those who demonstrate an interest in or commitment to working with underrepresented populations.
  • Preference may also be given to students who have an interest in practicing value-creating education over the long term or those who demonstrate a record of service and commitment to the ideals of Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda, and Daisaku Ikeda. Learn more.

The Dan and Irene Hayes Mathematics Education Scholarship

This scholarship supports a mathematics student in the College of Education. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in secondary mathematics education in the College of Education

  • Have completed at least 16 credit hours
  • Preference for students from underrepresented populations OR students who have demonstrated an interest in/commitment to increasing prevalence of underrepresented populations in Education
  • Additional consideration for students with demonstrated service in student government

Brown Family Endowed Scholarship for Counseling

  • Be enrolled in the College of Education
  • Must be a full-time student in final year of graduate counseling program
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate good academic standing

Other Financial Resources for Students in Need

Double Demon Scholarship

The university offers a Double Demon Scholarship exclusively to DePaul alumni. It provides funding for 25 percent of the tuition for a master's degree, non-degree or select certificate programs. Alumni from any of DePaul's colleges who are admitted to a graduate program automatically qualify for the Double Demon Scholarship. For more information about this scholarship, please contact a DePaul Admissions representative for the College of Education at (773) 325-4405.

External Scholarships

The College of Education's Scholarship Connect site lists scholarship opportunities that are external to the university. All external scholarship opportunities are vetted by the Office of Financial Aid. These external opportunities can be found on Scholarship Connect under the "Opportunities" tab. Select the "External" option, or visit directly here.

Student Financial Accounts

Student Financial Accounts provides students with financial aid information, tuition payments, account refunds, and many other valuable services. Contact Student Financial Accounts for information about your financial aid packet and for assistance requesting a refund after being awarded a COE scholarship.

Financial Fitness

DePaul's Financial Fitness Program provides free services, resources, and tools to help DePaul students manage costs from freshman year through graduation and beyond. 

DePaul Student Emergency Financial Assistance

For students experiencing extreme financial hardship, emergency assistance may be available. Visit the DePaul Division of Mission and Ministry for information on the Vincentian Assistance Fund. In addition, students facing financial hardship may contact the Dean of Students Office regarding the Student Emergency Assistance Fund (SEAF).  ​

American Association of University Women

"Since 1888, AAUW has been one of the largest funders of women's graduate education, investing in women who go on to change the world." Visit the AAUW site for fellowship and grant information.

United Negro College Fund

"UNCF envisions a nation where all Americans have equal access to a college education that prepares them for rich intellectual lives, competitive and fulfilling careers, engaged citizenship and service to our nation." Hispanic Scholarship Fund

"The HSF Scholarship is designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage obtain a university degree." Visit the HSF site for scholarship information.

Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois Program

"The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program is a teacher preparation and tuition assistance program for high school seniors and freshman and sophomore Illinois college students who have the determination and drive to be highly effective teachers in Illinois schools-of-need."
