Scholarship FAQ

What is required to apply for COE scholarships?

Applicants must be enrolled in the College of Education to apply for COE scholarships. Each year, applicants must complete the General Application on Scholarship Connect before proceeding to COE applications. Most COE scholarship applications include an essay requirement.

College of Education scholarships are extremely competitive, and students are encouraged to submit essays that detail their qualifications. At this time, 15 scholarships specific to the College exist; in the past academic year, over 1,000 applications were received for these opportunities.

How do I know if I'm eligible for COE scholarships?

All of the criteria for each COE scholarship are listed on the Scholarship Opportunities page. For questions regarding eligibility, please contact COE scholarship staff.

Can I apply for a COE scholarship at any time of the year?

No. The COE has established scholarship application periods throughout the academic year. The 2016-2017 dates for these application periods are located on our Scholarship Opportunities page. While the majority of COE scholarships are offered during the Fall quarter, there are other opportunities during the academic year for which some students may qualify.
Please note: Students may access the Scholarship Connect application website at any time. Many university and external scholarships are available for application at any time.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?

Yes. In fact, the COE scholarship staff encourages students to apply for as many scholarships as they are eligible.

Do COE scholarship applications have essay requirements?

While there is no word requirement for COE scholarship essays, the scholarship staff encourages applicants to use the essay opportunity to express to the scholarship committee their qualifications, achievements, and goals. Please thorougly proofread essays for spelling and grammatical errors before submitting. For assistance with crafting scholarship essays, please contact The Writing Center.

If I apply for more than one COE scholarship, do I have to write multiple essays?

If you apply for multiple COE scholarships, you may submit the same essay. However, please note that some scholarships require different types of essays or ask different questions. Craft your essays to appeal to specific scholarships when necessary.

When and how do I find out if I have been awarded a scholarship?

Scholarship result times vary, but results typically become available to students within 8-10 weeks after the scholarship application deadline. All students are notified via e-mail by scholarship staff when decisions are made. At that time, applicants may log in to Scholarship Connect to view the status of their applications, which will show whether their application has been selected to receive an award, or reviewed but not selected. All applicants are notified of their result no matter the outcome of their application.

Once I have been awarded a scholarship, what do I need to do?

If you are awarded a scholarship, you will be notified via e-mail and prompted to log in to Scholarship Connect. Your Scholarship Connect profile will display the scholarship award offer, and you will be able to select "Accept."

Endowed scholarship receipients are invited to offer written words of thanks to their scholarship donors and are also invited to attend a scholarship luncheon during the spring quarter.  You may share your written words of thanks through the Scholarship Recipient Questionnaire, using your Campus Connect credentials to log in.

How are awards distributed?

Once award recipients manually accept their scholarship on Scholarship Connect, the award will be distributed to their accounts within 10 business days. The award money will be split evenly among three academic quarters. Students may contact the Office of Financial Aid's scholarship team with award distribution inquiries at ofascholarships@depaul.edu or by contacting DePaul Central.

When is the award money distributed, and to what academic year does it apply?

Almost all COE scholarship awards dispersed during the 2016-2017 academic year will apply to this same academic year, with the award money split evenly over three academic quarters. The one exception is the Elsie Luhan Award, to which students apply during this current academic year, with award money contributing to the following academic year.

Can I meet with the COE Scholarship Staff to learn more about COE scholarships and the application process?

Yes! Please contact Beth King at bking18@depaul.edu or Sarah Magnuson at smagnuso@depaul.edu. Both Beth and Sarah would be happy to schedule a time to meet to discuss your scholarship options.
