Student Experience Improvement Project

Welcome to the Student Experience Information Project information page!

This year is going to be one of big changes in the School of Education. Why? We conducted an in-depth study of the student experience and we listened to many voices: students, faculty and staff. We learned many things, most importantly that our students need more support in navigating their program. We have already begun to improve services and streamline requirements.

Latest updates for Initial Certification Programs:

STEP (Steps to Teacher Education Programs)

Just as physicians progress through stages of medical school (medical student, intern, resident), so education candidates must progress through stages of teacher preparation. The School of Education is proudly accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). In accordance with NCATE guidelines, we must require students to demonstrate increasingly rigorous qualifications as they pass through stages of their program.

STEPs
  • New students enter the Teacher Education program as Pre-Teacher Candidates (Step 1).
  • Students move through the program meeting additional requirements to become, Advanced Teacher Candidates (Step 2).
  • Advanced Teacher Candidates meet more rigorous requirements for the next step which is to become a Student Teacher (Step 3).
Each step requires increased levels of qualifications.

At each step students' files are reviewed to determine if they are qualified to continue in the program.

What does this mean for students earning their first teaching certificate?

  • New students who have just entered the School of Education are a Pre-Teacher Candidates (Step 1).
  • To become an Advanced Teacher Candidate (Step 2) students must:
    • Pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test
    • Pass the Basic Technology Assessment (undergrads, SCU 025; grads, SCG 025)
    • Meet the GPA requirement (undergrads, 2.75; grads, 3.0)
    • Submit a Petition for Advanced Standing
  • To move to Step 3, Student Teacher, students should
    • Meet with an academic advisor to discuss academic clearance for student teaching. Academic clearance means that all coursework, including general education courses, content courses, and education courses need to be on track for completion prior to student teaching.
    • Pass the Content Area Test.
    • The Office of Field Experience needs to have in your file:
      • Three faculty recommendations (submitted by faculty online)
      • The total field experience hours for your program completed and approved on FEDS
      • Negative TB (Tuberculosis) test results (taken 90 days or fewer before you begin student teaching).

ISP 120 Exam is discontinued for graduate students
    (No More ISP 120 Exam)

For graduate students who were admitted prior to fall, 2005, the biggest change in the requirements for Advanced Standing is that the ISP 120 exam is no longer required. Teacher Candidates who are currently registered to take the exam or enrolled in the course, should cancel their registration or drop the course.

Undergraduate students must still take ISP 120 as part of their Liberal Studies Requirements. However, this course can now be taken any time prior to student teaching.

Instructor-directed field experience forms replace Level I/Level II forms
(No More Pink and Purple Forms)

Evaluation of field experiences has changed. In courses that require a field experience, the instructor will give students directions about how they are to be evaluated. Evaluation forms will be provided by the instructor and should be returned to the instructor. Pink and purple evaluation forms have been discontinued. No evaluation forms should be turned in to the School of Education office on the 4th floor of SAC.
