Graduate Programs of Study

M.A. or M.Ed, Teaching & Learning Certification: Elementary Education, Naperville Campus

Program Requirements
In addition to the professional education courses outlined below, students must meet these requirements for Illinois State teaching certification:

Courses
To earn a Master of Education: 12 courses and Student Teaching (56 quarter hours)
To earn a Master of Arts: 13 courses and Student Teaching (60 quarter hours)
Introductory Courses
  • T&L 409 Professional Practice in Elementary School
  • SCG 403 Human Development and Learning--Elementary
Practicum Courses
  • T&L 412 Emerging Reading and Language Arts
  • T&L 413 Reading and Language Arts in the Intermediate and Middle Grades
  • T&L 415 Teaching and Learning Elementary Science
  • T&L 416 Teaching and Learning Elementary Mathematics
  • T&L 418 Learning Through the Arts
Special Education
  • LSI 446 Psychology and Education of the Exceptional Child
Foundations of Education
  • SCG 408 Education and Society
  • SCG 410 Introduction to Research: Purpose, Issues, and Methodologies
Middle School (optional)
  • SCG 439 Philosophy and Psychology of Middle Level Education
    (Students interested in teaching in departmentalized middle level settings, grades 5-8, must take SCG 439. Unless you take SCG 439, you are qualified to teach in grades K-4 only. This is an additional course.)
Student Teaching
  • T&L 585 Student Teaching and Seminar
Induction Year
  • T&L 610 Induction into the Teaching Profession
  • T&L 612 Teaching as Research or T&L 613 Negotiating Curriculum in the Classroom
