Graduate Programs of Study

Teaching & Learning Certification: Early Childhood Education, M.A. or M.Ed


Degree Requirements
In addition to the coursework outlined below, requirements include content Area Prerequisites, State Certification Tests, Field Experiences and Student Teaching.

Master of Education: 12 courses and Student Teaching (56 quarter hours)

Master of Arts: 13 courses (including a thesis) and Student Teaching (60 quarter hours)

Content Area Prerequisites
DePaul requires coursework in the curriculum that is taught in preschool and primary classrooms. Students who did not take these classes in their bachelor's degree program will need to take them while pursuing their teaching certificate. These classes may be taken at the undergraduate or graduate level. Completion of content area requirements is not a prerequisite to admission but all must be fulfilled before student teaching.
  • Writing: 1 course
  • Fine Arts or Literature: 1 course
  • Mathematics: 1 course
  • Science: 1 course
  • Social Science: 1 courses
  • American Government or US History: 1 course
  • Health or Nutrition: 1 course

Pre-Teacher Candidate Courses (18 hours)
  • SCG 404 Human Development and Learning: The Early Years (taken concurrently with T&L 400)
  • T&L 400 Clinical Experience with Infants/Toddlers (1 credit)

  • HSC 409 Child, Family and Multicultural Community (taken concurrently with T& L 401)
  • T&L 401 Clinical Experience with Young Children and Families(1 credit)
  • T&L 406 Language Development of the Young Child

  • SCG 025 Basic Technology Assessment (non-credit)

  • SCG 409 Sociology of Education
  • SCG 411 Philosophy of Education
Advanced Teacher Candidate Courses (30 hours)
  • SCG 410 Introduction to Research: Purposes, Issues, and Methodologies
  • T&L 407 Preprimary Programs: Curriculum and Strategy (taken concurrently with T&L 402)
  • T&L 402 Clinical/Field Experiences with Preschoolers (taken concurrently with T&L 407)[1 hour]
  • T&L 408 Curriculum and Instruction in Primary Grades (taken concurrently with T&L 403)
  • T&L 403 Clinical/Field Experiences in Primary Grades (taken concurrently with T&L 408)[1 hour]
  • T&L 411 Assessment in Early Childhood
  • T&L 412 Emerging Reading and Language Arts
  • T&L 420 Math and Science in Early Childhood


  • Choose one:
  • T&L 419 Children's Literature and Family Literacy (must be taken before student teaching)
  • T&L 614 Induction to Teaching ( must be taken after student teaching)
Student Teaching and Seminar (8 hours)
  • T&L 595 Early Childhood Student Teaching (6 hours)
  • T&L 596 Early Childhood Seminar (2 hours)
To Earn a Master of Arts
If you choose to earn a Master of Arts degree, you must take this course, write a thesis, and complete an oral examination regarding the thesis (4 hours).

Grade Requirements for All Concentrations
To receive graduate credit for an upper-level undergraduate course a grade of B- or better must be attained. A grade of D+, or D is unacceptable for graduate credit in this program, and if earned in a required course must be repeated or substituted as directed by the department or program. Such grades remain on the academic record and are calculated into the cumulative GPA.
