    You are invited to a "Get to Know Us" reception on June 12, 2007. In accordance with DePaul's commitment to excellence, the Reading Specialist and Special Education programs offered by the School of Education are one-of-a-kind and designed to meet the growing demand for Reading Specialists and Special Education teachers. At the reception, you will be able to:

    Information Sesseions

    Graduate Teacher Certification Program Information Sessions. Teacher certification programs provide a master's degree and certification in early childhood, elementary, or secondary teaching certificate. A dual certification program in Elementary and Special Education is also available.     Advanced Graduate Program Information Sessions. Advanced graduate programs provide professional development opportunities for educators and human services personnel in the areas of Bilingual/Bicultural Education, Curriculum Studies, Educational Leadership, Human Services and Counseling, Special Education (Language, Literacy, Specialized Instruction), as well as Social and Cultural Foundations in Education.     Scholarships for Graduate Students. Graduate students from traditionally underrepresented groups who intend to work at the college level may qualify for a State of Illinois Scholarship program for graduate or doctoral studies designed to increase the number of underrepresented faculty and staff in Illinois institutions of higher learning. Successful applicants must agree to apply for a position as educator or administrator in an Illinois or Michigan institution, governing board or state agency for a period equal to the number of years that the student received the award.     Professional Development Opportunities for Teachers

    NEW! Special Education (Type 10 - LBS1) Certificate and Master's Degree
    Maximize your ability to teach every student in your class. Understand the strengths and needs of students with disabilities. Increase your repertoire of teaching strategies. DePaul now offers a special education program for practicing teachers who want to enhance their instructional skills and career flexibilty. Candidates in the program will complete indepth course work in characteristics, assessment, and instruction of students with both high-incidence and low-incidence disabilities across the 5-21 age range. The program focuses on helping students with disabilities succeed in the general education classroom as well as on developing strategies for students who need an independence curriculum. The program includes two field-based practicums offered in the summer.For more information about the program, visit the

    NEW! Reading Specialist (Type 10) Certificate and Master's Degree
    Become a Reading Specialist. The program is unique because it combines developmental and remedial reading coursework with coursework in learning disabilities. It provides candidates with a well rounded but in-depth understanding of issues related to teaching literacy to students with a wide variety of strengths and needs in urban environments. The graduate program concentration in Reading and Learning Disabilities blends best practices in reading instruction and intervention with an understanding of reading/learning disabilities. The program is housed in the Language, Literacy, and Specialized Instruction (LLSI) Program in the School of Education. Candidates who complete the program will be exposed to theory and practice in reading instruction for a wide variety of "typical" readers and those with reading problems. Coursework also includes the knowledge and skills needed to become a leader in reading curriculum and reading program management for a school or school district.     Announcing New Certification Test for Teacher Certification Students Information
    Effective October 1, 2003, persons applying for an early childhood, elementary, secondary, or special K-12 certificate in PE, music or special education are required to pass the Assessment of Professional Teaching Test in addition to the Illinois Test of Basic Skills and the Subject-Matter Knowledge Test (commonly known as the Content Area Test.) This new test covers the Illinois Core Standards (Professional Teaching Core, Language Arts Core, Technology Core). Information on the framework for the content of the test can be viewed at the Illinois Certification Testing System web site,
    www.icts.nesinc.com, click "Test Frameworks," then "Assessment of Professional Teaching." A study guide will be available at that web site in March 2003. Fall 2003 student teachers are advised to take the Assessment of Professional Teaching Test in July 2003. Registration information can be found at the ICTS web site www.icts.nesinc.com in the coming months.
