A department of education began at DePaul in 1911. The School of Education was established by the university in 1962. It prepares educators at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in a variety of programs. The history of the School of Education is one filled with a commitment to teacher preparation.
The mission of the School of Education is closely aligned with the urban, Catholic, and Vincentian mission of Depaul University.
The mission statement contains the functions, principles, goals, understandings, and practices that defines our mission.
Today, the School of Education is a high-quality professional education program guided by a conceptual framework: the Urban Professional Multicultural Educator. The framework is knowledge-based and serves as the foundation for all School of Education programs.
Our diverse student body and the urban clientele they are being prepared to serve also guide this program. The DePaul student is actively involved in learning, analyzing, discussing, assessing and applying the appropriate body of knowledge for each program. The commitment to multicultural and urban educational values is enriched further by the Vincentian spirit, especially personalism, that touches every aspect of the University.
Programs are developed and supported by a carefully chosen array of theorists and research data, as well as experience with best practice in the field. This serves to provide the academic content and structure in each of the programs of study. To learn more about School of Education graduate programs, we recommend attending an information session.
