Educational Leadership - Principal Program Admission

Admission Eligibility

DePaul offers several options for students seeking Principal licensure at the master's level: an Educational Leadership - Principal master's degree program​, with Principal and Catholic Principal concentration options, or a Principal Licensure program​.

To be eligible to enroll in the Educational Leadership - Principal master's degree program, students must have a bachelor's degree, two years of full-time teaching experience, a valid Illinois teaching license, and a passing score on either the Illinois Basic Skills Test or the Test of Academic Proficiency. 

To enroll in the Principal Licensure program, students must have a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in education, two years of full-time teaching experience, a valid Illinois teaching license, and a passing score on either the Illinois Basic Skills test or the Test of Academic Proficiency.

Application Requirements

A complete application to the Educational Leadership - Principal master's degree program or the Principal Licensure program will include the following materials:

  • Graduate admission application
  • $40 application fee
  • Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
  • Resume
  • Copy of valid Illinois teaching license
  • Proof of passing Illinois Basic Skills test or new Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP)
  • One letter from district office recommending entrance into the principal preparation program
  • Four letters of recommendation (two from supervisors and two from colleagues)
  • Statement of purpose indicating why you want to become a principal

Applicants can upload supplemental application materials, send requests for letters of recommendation, and pay the application fee through our online application system.

Application Deadlines

The Educational Leadership - Principal master's degree program and the Principal Licensure program admit new students in the fall, winter, and spring quarters. The program offers rolling admissions, but regular deadlines are set to assure students full consideration for admission and financial aid. These programs will continue to accept and process applications after the regular deadline if space is available.

Applicants will be required to participate in an interview with Educational Leadership program faculty as part of the admissions process. Once a complete application has been submitted, the Office of Graduate Admission will contact the applicant to schedule an interview.​​​
