Leaders in early childhood education envision and develop powerful new directions and implement effective, nurturing practices in a variety of settings (universities, community organizations, and governmental agencies.) They use conceptual competencies and access supportive professional networks to transform their vision of learning into action and to influence policy issues in the field of early childhood education.
Recognizing the shortage of highly trained early childhood professionals at the university level, the Early Childhood Education doctoral program is rooted in applied child development, guidelines set by professional and research organizations, curricular theory that embraces the notion of learner self-efficacy, inquiry-based curricula, and partnerships with families. Students in the program complete two innovative research and teaching internships prior to starting dissertation work.
Graduates may assume faculty positions in higher education, take leadership positions in local and state education agencies, assume curriculum positions in school or community learning environments, or become leaders in educational policy and advocacy.
