Middle School Mathematics Education

The Middle School Mathematics Education (M.S.M.E) program strengthens teachers’ knowledge, understanding, skills, and judgment in order to increase student access to high quality mathematics instruction.  The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Education will offer the master of science in middle school mathematics education jointly.

Why is DePaul's Program Special?

This program was collaboratively designed to include innovative approaches and strategies that interweave:

  • content and pedagogy throughout the student experiences
  • use of technology in the classroom
  • investigation of research-based curricular materials supported by the Chicago Public Schools.
We hope to challenge teachers to develop mathematical ways of thinking so they can inspire their students by giving them an opportunity to experience mathematical thought and problem solving starting at the earliest grades.  The ultimate goal is that the students taught by the program’s graduates will come to see themselves as powerful learners of mathematics, will value mathematics as an activity.

Degree Requirements

Our twelve-course (48 quarter-hour) program is designed for teachers certified in grades K-8 and will allow participants to meet the requirements for an endorsement in middle school mathematics.  The degree program is designed to be a cohort program with groups of teachers taking the same courses together in the same order. All courses are 4 credit hours and all twelve courses are required.
