Academic Advising

Academic advisors are available for consultation during your academic career. All the tools needed for your academic success are on this website. You can meet with an academic advisor at any point in your academic career. We strongly encourage new students to meet with an academic advisor in their first quarter to develop an academic plan. You can use this plan to guide your academic career. Academic advisors are trained to assist you with any difficulties you may encounter and may make appropriate referrals as needed.

Academic advisors can assist you with progression toward degree completion, degree and certification requirements, navigating the university, course selection and registration issues, exploring teaching areas and endorsements, explaining requirements for Advanced Standing, and many other things. All advisors are assigned by major/program.

APPOINTMENTS FOR COUNSELING STUDENTS

Effective immediately the Counseling faculty are moving to a more direct advising model with the students in all concentrations of the program. This shift in one-on-one advising will create a closer mentoring relationship between the professors and the students in the program. Faculty advisors should be the CSL studentıs first stop to discuss the overall program, course planning, goal setting, career planning, and internship preparation. The faculty believe that this models what our students will be doing with their future students and clients in their careers. Please use your faculty advisor as the point person for all questions. Faculty advisors are assigned at the time of admittance into the program and are generally assigned according to your concentration. If you have any general questions about advising please contact Dr. Rich Whitney at 773-325-4065 or rwhitne5@depaul.edu.

APPOINTMENTS AND WALK-IN ADVISING

At the beginning of the term and during registration week, we use a walk-in advising model. During walk-in advising, students are able to sign up for a 15-minute appointment with an advisor to review course schedule, assist with schedule changes, and ask brief questions. Longer follow up appointments are available if you and your advisor agree one is necessary.

Walk-in Advising for Spring 2012 Registration will be Monday, February 13th through Friday, February 17th. The hours will be 10-12:30pm and 2-6pm on Monday through Thursday, and 10-12:30 on Friday.

To schedule an appointment, please use our new online tool through Campus Connection. The online system allows you to view the selected times the advisor is available and reserve an appointment. To schedule, simply click on the Advising Center tab in Campus Connection, find your COE Professional Staff Advisor, click on the calendar icon, and reserve a time. For a visual reference, please see the Advising Appointments Get The Facts flyer.

Our office is open Monday-Thursday from 9am-6pm and Fridays from 9am-5pm. (Hours may vary in summer and in December.)  Advisors are avalable for appointments at scheduled times while the office is open, however, should you need an appoinment outside of those times, please contact your advisor directly.
