Reading Teacher Endorsement

Program Description   

The Reading Teacher Endorsement is offered as an option in the Curriculum Studies program for certified Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary education teachers.  It is intended for those who are interested in furthering their professional career goals in the areas of reading and writing.

This endorsement is designed to enhance the knowledge of K-12 educators in reading research, theory and practice.  Candidates who complete the endorsement will be considered "highly qualified" literacy teachers.

  • Our courses reflect the belief that teachers must honor the unique literacy ability each student brings to the classroom
  • Our course content helps participants learn how to assess, diagnose, interpret and provide appropriate literacy instruction using a range of materials, strategies and instructional approaches that support students' growth over time.
  • Candidates for the Reading Teacher Endorsement will engage in critical reflection about reading theory and beliefs, engage in the most current literacy practices and address the complexities of reading and literacy practices in the 21st century.

Endorsement Option

State requirement for the Reading Teacher Endorsement includes:

  • 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours of literacy courses
  • reading practicum
  • Students must take and pass the state exam for reading teachers.

Admission Requirements

In order to qualify for the Reading Teacher Endorsement applicants must

  • Hold a valid Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary Education teaching certificate
  • Have completed at least one course in early adolescent psychology
  • Have completed one course in reading methods
  • Submit transcripts and apply for the Reading Endorsement through the Illinois State Board of Education  and receive a deficiency statement that indicates the courses needed for the endorsement.
