Program Description
DePaul's School of Education offers a program for practicing teachers who have a K-9 elementary teaching certificate and who plan to teach mathematics in middle schools. The program enables participants to complete the 18 semester hours of mathematics credit that is required for a middle school endorsement and to enhance their ability to teach mathematics. Students who aim to become leaders in the reform of mathematics education may include these courses in a Master's degree program for middle school mathematics educators.
Distinct DePaul Features
- The design and content of the program is based on recent research on mathematics teaching and learning.
- Mathematics is presented as an activity, a way of thinking which involves identifiable mathematical habits of mind.
- There is an organic integration of mathematics content and pedagogy; students will experience learning mathematics in appropriate ways.
- Curriculum materials from model middle school projects are incorporated with course work so that students will become familiar with and understand the underlying rationales of innovative materials.
- Appropriate use of technology is incorporated throughout the program.
- Issues of diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism are infused throughout the curriculum.
