The curriculum studies program is designed for professional educators who wish to enhance their own professional practice in teaching, curriculum development or the administration of a department or educational program. It aims to equip leaders from a variety of educational settings with the skills necessary to develop, justify, evaluate and modify curricula so that the needs of students, especially those in urban environments, will be better served. These skills have become increasingly significant for schools, but they also are needed in other organizations- hospitals, businesses, associations, community and civic agencies, and museums-- that are confronted with the necessity of educating their employees, students, patrons or the public in a time of fast moving social and technological change.
Students are encouraged to plan their own sequences of electives to meet their career goals. Some students may choose electives that strengthen their preparation in a subject area while others seek to improve their preparation for curriculum work in non-school settings (ie: nursing, health education, corporate training etc)
Students can choose a career emphasis that may lead to the following endorsements:
Some of the career sequences may qualify a teacher who already have a teaching certificate for an additional endorsement or certificate from the Illinois State Certification Board (provided all other state requirements are met)
It requires 52 quarter hours or 13 courses to complete the Curriculum Studies degree
