Bilingual Education/ESL Endorsement Only

Program Description   

The need for qualified K-12 Bilingual (BE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers continues  to increase in the Chicago metropolitan area.  In just one year, you can complete  all the coursework required to obtain your official endorsement/approval as a BE or ESL teacher.  The Bilingual Endorsement allows teachers to teach in both bilingual and ESL settings, while the ESL endorsement allows teachers to teach in ESL settings only.

The BE and ESL Endorsement Only program is offered as an option in the Bilingual Bicultural Educaton Program to educators who hold a Type 03, Type 04, Type 09, and/or Type 29 certificate.  These endorsements are designed to prepare educators to serve English language learners in a variety of contexts, including bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs  at K-12 and adult education levels.

Distinctive Depaul Features

Students completing the endorsement will gain the following:

  • necessary skills for designing instruction,
  • evaluating and designing educational materials
  • assessing the language development of English learners

Bilingual Education Endorsement

  • 7 courses, 28 quarter hours

English as a Second Language Endorsement

  • 7 courses, 28 quarter hours

Bilingual Education & English as a Second Language Endorsement

  • 8 courses, 32 quarter hours

For the Bilingual Education Endorsement students must pass the following exam

  • State of Illinios Language Profiency Exam

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the Bilingual Education/ESL Endorsement, students must hold a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university and a valid teaching certificate.

To apply, please submit the following items to the Office of Graduate Admission:

  • A completed application
  • Application Fee ($40.00)
  • A copy of valid teaching certificate
  • One official copy transcript(s) from all colleges and universities attended
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors
  • Interview, if requested by faculty
  • Statement of purpose indicating professional development goals and related experiences (750 words)
  • Resume or curriculum vitae showing evidence or adequate background for program.
