Our History

1911 -  DePaul establishes a department of education.

1962 - The University establishes School of Education.

1962-1989 - The school remains relatively small with fewer than 500 students and 20 full-time faculty members.

1989 - The School of Education introduces an innovative master’s degree option for those who wished to change careers and become educators (Teaching and Learning Program).

1990-1991 - The School developed its focus, philosophy, and commitment to urban, multicultural, professional education.

1991-1999 -  Our School faculty, staff, and student body become more diverse. Student population grows to 1800.

1998 - School of Education establishes a Doctoral Program with strands in Educational Leadership and Curriculum Studies.

2000  -  School of Education establishes a master’s program in Social and Cultural Foundations of Education, with a focus on social justice.

2002  -  School of Education establishes program in Bilingual/Bicultural Education

2003 - School of Education establishes Reading Specialist and Visual Arts Education programs.   A departmental administrative structure is established for the first time.

2010 - School of Education begins joint 5-year BA/MA program in secondary education in partnership with College of Arts and Sciences.

2011 - School of Education offers curriculum studies and special education programs online.

2012 - Increasing complexity of education offerings and activities within the school provide the stimulus for a change in name to the College of Education.
