Mission and Values
Since our inception over forty-three years ago, we have stood by our mission of making a difference in learning. The Family Lab has undergone progressive transitions to carry out this mission and continues to exceed expectations in offering exceptional services to students, as well as the community. The newly remodeled Family Lab houses the Literacy and Specialized Instruction program and Counseling program. These programs share a common set of core values which is centered on enriching DePaul graduate students through clinical experiences. By providing superior tutoring services and practicum opportunities for students, we are able to guide them to their optimal learning potential. Our facility has a plethora of educational resources for students, staff, and families to utilize.
Services Provided
Each academic quarter, The Family Lab is proud to offer practicums with academic tutoring for grades K-9. Academic tutoring in the form of Diagnostic and Remediation practicums are offered for students with difficulties in reading and learning. Services are provided by graduate students who are Master's candidates for the Reading Specialist program and are in the last phase of their degree. They are supervised by university faculty members in a clinical setting. The graduate students assess and evaluate reading performance, create and teach lessons, and reinforce positive reading strategies. Additionally, the graduate students provide suggestions, develop interventions, and create a final case report for the parents and schools to support their reading practices.
The Family Lab also serves as a training facility for candidates in the Counseling (CSL) Master's program. Each quarter candidates learn, practice, and develop counseling skills under the guidance and supervision of CSL faculty. Through the use of the technologically equipped labs, CSL faculty and candidates can view their counseling skills and digitally record their counseling practice sessions for discussion and supervision.
Goals
When envisioning the future, we see the Family Lab expanding to accommodate the many programs it will facilitate including the Literacy and Specialized Instruction program and Counseling program.
