Primary Grades Mathematics Program

Description

DePaul's School of Education offers a sequence of four courses for practicing teachers who have a K-9 elementary teaching certificate and who plan to teach mathematics in grades K through 5. The program will enable participants to complete all requirements for a CPS K - 5 mathematics specialization, and it will enhance their ability to teach mathematics to children. Teachers who aim to become leaders in the reform of mathematics education may include these courses in a Master's degree program in Curriculum Studies.

Distinctive Features

• The design and content of the program is based on recent research on mathematics teaching and learning.
• Mathematics is presented as an activity, a way of thinking which involves identifiable mathematical habits of mind.
• There is an organic integration of mathematics content and pedagogy; students will experience learning mathematics in appropriate ways.
• Curriculum materials from modelcurriculum projects are incorporated with course work so that students will become familiar with and understand the underlying rationales of innovative materials.
• Appropriate use of technology is incorporated throughout the program.
• Issues of diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism are infused throughout the curriculum.

Additional Features

• All courses in the program are standards based. They incorporate the NCTM and the Illinois process standards, they pay close attention to the Illinois Learning goals, and they are closely connected to the Illinois Content Standards and to the Illinois Technology Standards.
• During the 2003-04 academic year, courses will meet once a week on Monday evenings. Additional courses may be scheduled for the summer of 2004.
• All courses in the program will be connected to school and classroom experiences and will have a focus on restructuring mathematics education at the building level.
• You can combine this program with a Master's degree in Curriculum Studies

Admissions

Applicants are expected to be:

• Currently teaching  in grades K-8;
• Committed to the reform of mathematics education;
• Prepared to teach in multicultural settings to diverse populations; and
• >Expecting to make a difference in their schools.

Apply to the School of Education as a Non-Degree Student and include the following:

• A completed graduate  application form to the School of Education (indicate which of the above programs you are interested in where it says 'other' near the bottom right of the first page).
• Evidence that you have a Bachelor's degree ( a copy of a transcript showing you have received a degree, a FAX of a transcript from your college, ...)
• A check for $40 made out to DePaul.
• Request that all official transcripts be sent to the School of Education from your college or university.

The Graduate Office will do its best to give you a quick turnaround.
